Rosa Parks ! :)
As a child, she was raised on her grandparent’s farm. She was forced to walk to school because the law foreboded any blacks to ride on the bus. She chose to drop out of school due to illness but she returned to school and in 1932 she received high school diploma. Once b
lacks were allowed on the buses, she refused to give up her seat, so she was arrested. She was fined $14 because of this. She caused an all day bus boycott on the day of trial. Lastly, she died on October 24. I chose Rosa Parks as my Black history month idol because she didn’t allow segregation or discrimination force her to change her seat. To other blacks, they would give it up because it may just be a seat to them. But to Rosa Parks, it was her dignity, her pride, and her self respect.

This has been the coldest winter in years, and it’s not only affecting us, but it is also affecting some of our favorite American fruits. Florida, which is the ‘sunny’ state, has seen some temperatures in the teens. This is affecting our citrus fruits. Florida is one of the only places in America that can grow citrus fruits because its temperature stays consistent year-round. Temperatures in Miami, which would normally be around 75 degrees at this time of year, barely reached the 40s yesterday. Once the temperature gets that low, the citrus plants cannot survive. They can only stand that temperature for about four hours. This sudden drastic drop in temperature could be trouble for the orange juice market. According the the article, “Florida citrus is a $9.3 billion industry. The state produces three-quarters of the United States’ orange crop and 40 percent of the world’s orange juice supply.” So, if these oranges and other citrus fruits fail to live through the brutal winter, the amount of money spent to get the citrus market back on track could cost a lost of money not to mention the time citrus workers would have to work. In conclusion, this potential freeze of the citrus orchards could greatly affect the economy and cause the loss of jobs. Citrus farmers are already working 7 days a week and there is no way that they can work any harder than they already are.

Current Event Story
On October 24, 2009, a high school teen went to a dance thinking that she was going to have a blast, but as the night went on, something happened that she will never forget. It all started in Richmond Union High School. It was their annual homecoming dance and this fifteen-year-old girl thought it would be cool to go with a couple of friends. The dance started and you couldn’t stop her from dancing. Moments went on and she was in a dark alley behind the high school. 10 of her classmates, who were in a gang, raped her while 10 other students watched. Therefore, there were 20 people seeing this happened, and nobody did anything to stop it. She was in critical condition. She was sent to the hospital for treatment and was recently released. Unfortunately, the suspects have been sent home due to lack of evidence found in this case. The trial is due back on January 21. The friends and family had a lot of things to say to whomever did this to this poor teen. Even though a very bad thing happened, everyone stayed calm and peaceful while speaking their message. Instead of going to the media and bashing, everything that has been going on, they wanted the community to get one message and one message only. That message was to prevent this horrific accident from happening to anyone else, and all the consequences, and actions that took present on that day. This is a very serious matter and i hope this never happens, again.

1. My Friend Allison- Last night i was having a terrible night, and i called up my best friend Allison while i was crying to talk and by the end of the conversation, i was laughing hysterically. She just makes the best of situations.
2. My dad- Whenever i need to write a paper for school and I’m sitting at my kitchen table of the computer, my dad will come by and tell me a joke . He does this to “lift” the pressure off of my shoulders and help me relax.
3. My grandma- Whenever i have a problem at school, and i go home in tears, my grandmother comes into my bedroom with a snack and she”ll tell me about her childhood. She’ll tell me about when milk was five cents and when everything was depressing. She’s so random sometimes and whenever I’m around her, i can never stay unhappy.
4. My friend Jordyn- She always brings out the best in me! We are always being compared to each other by both of our parents. She has been my best friend since Preschool and we have been close ever since.
5. My sister Cathy- Cathy is like a mother figure to me . She has been the only women roll model in my life for 12 years that i have seen day in and day out . She comes into my room at night and we can talk about anything . Cathy always has a way to turn my frown upside down.

Next week, the long-awaited swine flu (H1N1) vaccine is expected to arrive and be available to the public. There are two types of vaccines available. One is in the substance of a flu shot to kill influenza, and the other is in the form of a nasal spray, which will weaken the live flu virus. It is very much possible that the nasal spray will be first distributed to healthy people . However certain groups, including pregnant women, young children and people with compromised immune systems, cannot receive the nasal spray. There are no serious side affects to either of these preventions, but the shot may have minor swelling and sickness, for example, the common cold. “A flu-like illness could be caused by a wide array of viruses, not just H1N1. Unless the doctor actually tested your children for H1N1 and the test came back positive, your child should get the H1N1 vaccine. Most people who’ve had flu-like illness since April have not been tested” !
